Random Rules #3

I suppose I should post some content on my own website. What a novel idea.

Kanye West - Interviews (Interlude)
Some goofy track off of Can’t Tell Me Nothing [The Official Mixtape]. “Look, it’s my face.” I crack up every time he speaks this line. Note: He does not rap on this track. He just talks. It’s pretty much a shorter, better Last Call.

Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused
The 25 minuted version from How The West Was Won. I immediately skipped this track.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Annie-Dog
Some shitty track on Adore. I’d estimate that the Pumpkins are 85/15. 85% absolute filler, 15% listenable tracks. This one is certainly one of the 85%.

The Beatles - Honey Pie
The White Album is also 85/15.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - The House is Rockin’
Some solid blues rock.

Rush - Mystic Rhythms
This is one of two filler tracks on Chronicles.

DJ Shadow - What Does Your Soul Look Like, Part 4
This track is awesome because it’s one of those tracks that I downloaded years ago and really liked. Then years later I actually listened to the whole album and was wowed, and then angry at myself for not listening to it sooner.

Ghostface Killah - Big Girl
Produced by Ghost himself. Nice sample.

The Roots - Livin’ in a New World
Does anyone else think the beginning of this song sounds a lot like Beck?

The Beastie Boys - Benny and The Jets
If someone ever does a concept album where everyone is drunk, the dude singing on this track better be on it. Simply a masterful performance, and a nice guitar solo as well. One of my favorite guitar sounds of all-time.

Phish - Bouncing Around the Room
Standard Phish song, nothing too exciting. I MEAN, it’s good, just not amazing.

Stevie Wonder - Jesus Children of America
So for a while I thought the song in the preview for Be Kind Rewind was Stevie Wonder. I was wrong. Dang.

Chicago - Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?
Recently it has been brought to my attention that Chicago and The Grass Roots sounds very similar. Sorry Chicago, The Grass Roots win. Also, your name should have remained CTA.

Final Score
Embarrassment: 2
Elitism: 6
Obscurity: 6

The Hype Train: Walk Hard

10 Reasons Walk Hard is Going to Rock (Hard)
  1. It’s a mockrockumentary in the tradition of Spinal Tap.
  2. It stars John C. Reilly as a musician whose career transitions from crooning to protest folk to disco.
  3. It’s directed by Knocked Up artiste Judd Apatow.
  4. Pam (”Jenna Fischer”) is in it.
  5. Jack White as Elvis Presley.
  6. Jack Black as Paul McCartney.
  7. Paul Rudd as John Lennon.
  8. Eddie Vedder appears in an allusion to his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speeches.
  9. An awards ceremony in the film features a tribute to the main character performed by (ready?) Jewel, Jackson Browne, and Ghostface Killah.
  10. Supporting cast highlights: David Koechner, Kristen Wiig, Tim Meadows, Justin Long, Ed Helms, and Chris Parnell.

As gleaned from the newest Rolling Stone. IMDB.

Hip-Hop Updates With Which You Need Be Acquainted, Vol. 1

Persons of my demographic likely know Saigon better for his Entourage appearances than his hip-hop career, but might that soon change? Just Blaze posted the first single off Saigon’s oft-delayed major label debut on his blog, and it’s, uh, pretty nice. In this (different) video, also featuring Juice Crew alum Kool G Rap, Saigon goes wild with only the letter P. Prepare to be persuaded by political paraphrases (they ain’t) printing in the papers:

(You may also be interested in this video for Pain in my Life, another track from the album.) The real question is whether his album, The Greatest Story Never Told, will come out before or after Dre’s Detox, which is to say, will his album ever come out? It’s apparently been plagued by issues with clearances, record exec wrangling, and a well publicized online spat between Saigon and superproducer Just Blaze. Obligatory Chinese Democracy mention.

In your Kanye update, he turned in one great performance at Live Earth - his solo one - and one awkward one - the collabo with The Police and John Mayer. His track with John Mayer off the upcoming Graduation, though, sounds promising. You can hear it on this mixtape, which also features a Lose Yourself/Jesus Walks mash-up that I wish I had all of.

Said mixtape also features Kanye freestyling or something over Peter, Bjorn and John’s Young Folks. Kanye has obviously been listening to Q101. Good on everyone involved.

While I don’t love the singles he’s already released, Kanye’s work on Common’s upcoming album and the stuff he’s done with CRS sounds incredible. Should Obama be elected, will Common perform at his inauguration? Such an event would undoubtedly both herald the unquestionable arrival of hip-hop and serve as a harbinger for its downfall. But I’d mark out.

In an album recommendation, The Beastie Boys’ newest album is all instrumental and all awesome. Pick it up, it’s twelve tracks of great beats blending soul, hip-hop, and punk. Even better, they’re apparently planning a second version of the album which will feature popular and upcoming rappers. Intriguing. Hear stuff and such at their official site.

Jon Brion is hip-hop: The man behind the phenomenal I Huckabees soundtrack, Fiona Apple’s best work, and Kanye’s Late Registration is now being sampled by Just Blaze. And it works. Skip ahead to like 5:45 to avoid the long intro, but the beat is better than the rapping anyway.

Last but not least, Wu-Tang is coming back with Q-Tip and guest producers in tow. Sweet. Here’s a silly video for Ghostface’s Underwater from Fishscale. He had better be on the soundtrack for the Iron Man movie, preferably collaborating with the other Tony Starks, Robert Downey, Jr. Yes, he too is a musician:
